The relationship between the image and the topic of "Television", as it relates to the subject of religion and popular culture.

  The image demonstrates religion by showing an angel and the devil, both beings of most religions. The angel represents good, and the devil represents bad.

Popular Culture - reflects and shapes us

The image demonstrates popular culture because it reflects the good and bad values that we have (giving or selfish). The image alse shapes us because it reinforces our values and deepen our commitment to them because each person will choose either to be giving or to be selfish, just like Homer Simpson has to choose to be giving or selfish.

Characteristics of Popular Culture in the image:

  • Consists of artifacts - The angel and devil can be used as artifacts of religions.
  • Reflects audience beliefs and values - Reflects the audience's beliefs (in angels and demons) and values (giving against selfishness).
  • Commercial - Advertising religion.
  • It is often is imitative - The angel and devil on Homer's shoulder has been shown before in other ads and images.
  • Surrounds us - The choice of good against evil, and giving against selfishness is always surrounding us.
