Alternate Congregations Analysis

The relationship between the image and the topic of "Alternate Congregations", as it relates to the subject of religion and popular culture.

  "Alternative Worship usually refers to an approach to Christian worship and worship planning that emphasizes decentralized leadership, congregational participation, multi-sensory experience, ritual and narrative form. (1)"

The image is a Bible study which is an alternate congregation.

Similarities between an alternate congregation (Bible study) and a traditional congregation (Church meeting):

  • The focus of both is studying some of their religious teachings.
  • Both mostly meet at the same location at a predetermined time.
  • Both brings their Bibles or other religious books to the meeting.
  • Both are lead by a teacher/pastor.

Differences between an alternate congregation (Bible study) and a traditional congregation (Church meeting):
  • Usually fewer people attend a Bible study than church service.
  • A Bible study may be more informal, especially a Bible study at someone's home rather than at church.
  • The speaker of the formal church service usually is the only speaker with no interruptions from the congregation; whereas a Bible study may take questions from people at the study as the study progresses.
